At half past two this afternoon Jones sent for me. He was just in from his lunch, and, by the smell when he spoke, I think he must have had a drink or two. I couldnât imagine what he wanted, but naturally I felt nervous. Itâs always a little frightening to be told that the Boss wants to see you. Especially when you donât like the Boss very much and think he doesnât like you.
Jones was grinning away, all over himself with gush. I wonder was he nervous. âSit down,â he said. âSit down and make yourself comfortable.â
I sat down distrustfully. Whatâs he up to now, I wondered. Is he going to have another go at getting the house or has the Consultant recommended that my salary should be raised. (Ha ha.)
âOf course you know I always had great respect for your father,â Jones began. âGreat respect. A very fine man. The type of man you rarely find nowadays.â
I nodded my head. I couldnât think what he was at. Surely he hadnât called me in just to tell me what a fine man Father was.
Jones started again. âOn account of you being your fatherâs son, weâve always tried to give you special consideration.â
Another long pause. Once more I nodded my head vaguely to show I understood. Who is âwe,â I wondered. Itâs not surprising royalty get muddled if someone so far down the scale as Jones can call himself âwe.â
âWe would have liked to think that there was always room in the firm for a son of your father, but to be frank weâve been disappointed in you.â
Suddenly I realized that he was going to sack me. For a moment I felt quite numb with shock. Then I realized that I must argue with him, plead with him to keep me on. âBut, but . . .â I mumbled haltingly. âI mean, I didnât know thereâd been anything wrong with my work. I mean, I havenât been making mistakes or anything, have I?â
âTch-tch,â he said crossly. âItâs not your work. Itâs your capabilities. We canât afford to go on paying a man to do a girlâs work, and youâre not fit for any more responsible position.â
âBut how do you know?â I demanded, bold with desperation. âIâve never been given a chance at anything else.â
âYouâve been given every chance,â he replied. âI understand your potential is rated as nil.â He turned over some papers and looked secretly at one of them. âYes. âPotential Nil.â â Obviously this was the work of the Consultant.
I had to keep on talking. If I kept on talking I might somehow be able to stay in my job. I wouldnât be sacked till he actually told me so. He wanted to tell me, but he was having difficulty. I must have something about me. He feels that I am still the real bossâs son, and heâs frightened to sack me. Or perhaps itâs because Iâm the bossâs son he wants to sack me. Much more likely. All these thoughts flashed through my mind.
